The Silver Falls - History

Gateway to the Falls! That is how Silverton has often advertised itself in the past. Geologic wonder, scenic beauty. The falls and the creek have been there, goodness knows how many centuries, carved by glacier movements. The canopy of forest has been more vulnerable, succumbing to nature’s events and the needs of mankind.

Strolling through the state park, it’s hard to imagine that the natural beauty and wonderment was lost for a brief span of time, destroyed first by a raging fire in the 1860’s and then by logging interests in the early part of the 1900’s. It was a terrible fire that raged down through the Cascades starting at the Columbia and burning as far south as the falls. Burnt snags from that fir can be seen in a number of the first photographs taken at the falls. Old timers said that nothing grew on the land for a number of years.
