Clark Gable's - History

In the rich history of the timber industry in historic Silverton, a famous Hollywood actor’s name appears: Clark Gable. That yarn is quite interesting; but first the background story about Big Timber must be told.

It would be difficult to measure the impact big timber and logging has had on the Silverton area economy. Suffice it to say, the impact was as big as the timber being cut. There have been a multitude of small lumber mills since the first white settlers arrived here in 1843. The timber had to be cut in order to build houses and clear ground for agriculture, so the mills were one of the first things to be set up.

In an article written for the Silverton Appeal in 1950, June Drake, Silverton photographer and historian, told about three mills that used Silver Creek to transport logs: John Liechty’s mill was located on a site now occupied by the Hi-School Pharmacy shopping Center, on the western edge of town.
