The Coolidge / McClaine - History

Ai (pronounced ‘A’) Coolidge and Fielding ‘Jake’ McClaine have left their legacy all over Silverton.

The city park sits on original Coolidge land, deeded to the city in 1909. There are streets named after each one of them and the bank building that is now Silver Falls Bank was once The Coolidge & McClaine Bank, founded in 1880. The two formed a partnership that lasted until their deaths: McClaine in 1899 and Coolidge in 1909. There is even a section of the Silverton Cemetery designated as the Coolidge and McClaine Section where they and a large number of their family members are buried.

Ai Coolidge came to Silverton in 1851. He would play a vital role in the business venue of the area and began with a mercantile store. He located his business in the area’s first settlement called Milford which was about 2-3 miles south of present
