The Grist Mill - History

A number of small grist mills have operated in the Silverton area over the years, including the W.E. Loughmiller Flour Mill on C and North Water Streets, the Robert Scott Flour Mill on Butte Creek in Scotts Mills and the W.B. McCallister and Sons Flour Mill at Pratum. But the flouring mill that dominated the history of Silverton and made an imprint on the character of the town was the Fischer Flouring Mill.

At the height of its productivity, the Fischer Flouring Mill lay along the banks of Silver Creek in an area that was situated between what is now the city swimming pool and the Silverton City Hall. The mill, while a fixture of the early 20th century, had its beginnings in the mid-1800’s: in 1848, James Smith erected the first area mill in the town of Milford, located a few miles south of the current site of Silverton. Over the years, this mill changed hands several times and was owned by several local businessmen, including John Barger.
