Homer Davenport - History

Homer Calvin Davenport was a product of the pioneer life in Oregon. He was born on a farm in the Waldo Hills about five miles south of the town of Silverton on March 8, 1867. When Homer was three years old his mother Florinda died, but not before she made Homer’s father promise that he would do everything he could to develop her son’s budding natural drawing talent. Flora had recognized immediately that one day her son would become a famous cartoonist in the tradition of Thomas Nast.

Homer grew to be a lover of the outdoors, animals, and all kinds of sports. He received very little learning in schools but obtained a valuable education from nature and his remarkable father, Timothy Davenport, who was a man of “exceptionally high mental and moral worth.” In his own words, however, Homer admitted that in his
